Subcomandante Marcos

Subcomandante Marcos (now often known as Subcomandante Galeano) is the former spokesperson and leading figure of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas, Mexico. Emerging publicly in 1994, the Zapatistas combined Indigenous autonomy, anti-capitalism, and grassroots democracy in their struggle.

Marcos’ utopian vision is expressed through both political practice and poetic language. The Zapatista movement has created autonomous communities governed through assemblies, emphasizing dignity, participation, and local control. Rather than a single model, Marcos speaks of “a world where many worlds fit”—a plural, decentralized vision of coexistence and freedom.
